VoX Communications Intros Voice and Data Plan on Nokia's N900 Maemo Smart Phone

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributor

VoX Communications, a provider of voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) mobile phone services and a subsidiary of Pervasip Corp., has deployed a mobile-VoIP, unlimited data and voice service on the latest full-featured smart phone from Nokia.

Mark Richards, chief information officer at Pervasip, said that the company is now a voice and data service provider for this mobile computer.

Richard said that the N900 uses the Linux derivative Mameo operating system, an open-source platform. The platform enables the Maemo community to modify and continually develop software as part of the shared goal of brining added value to Maemo.

VoX is a Linux shop and the company employs several Linux experts, Richard said, adding that the company congratulates Nokia (News - Alert) for developing such a “sensational” introductory Linux phone.

Richard also said that this is the first phone that he has seen that has Skype (News - Alert) installed at the manufacturer. He also recognizes the future ability for a Skype video call via the front facing camera. “The phone even has a stand on the back to position the phone for Skype video calling.”

Additionally, some of the advantages, when combined with “our $69.95 per month unlimited voice, data and text plan,” make the combination of this smart phone along with a VoX service plan a very compelling offering, Richard said.

Richard believes that the Linux development community will embrace the open source initiative that Nokia has created and their OVI App store will grow rapidly because of the “appealing technical and philosophical commercial strategy.”

The company is expected to release a software download of its VoIP product, enabling customers -- who have already purchased an N900 -- to subscribe to the VoX Mobile VoIP plan with a signup process that will deliver the software to the phone.

The Nokia N900 with VoX Mobile service is now available to order from the VoX Web site, said company officials.

Last year in December, VoX Communications (News - Alert) became the first carrier to deploy a mobile VoIP unlimited data and voice phone in the U.S.
